A new list of approval ratings reveals that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is the most unpopular senator in the country.
According to Morning Consult’s quarterly Senate approval ratings, “Kentucky voters disapprove of the senator by a margin of 50% to 36% making him the least popular senator. McConnell is also the least popular senator with just independents and the seventh least popular Republican among Republican voters.”
McConnell has lost a net (-5) points in his approval rating since the 4th quarter of 2018. He is at a net (-56) with Democrats, a (-24) with Independents, but the reason why he is favored to win reelection is that he is a net (+29) with Republicans. There aren’t enough Democrats and Independents to defeat McConnell in Kentucky, so as long as he keeps his approval rating up with the state’s Republicans, he will be favored to win reelection in November.
Just like Trump, almost all of McConnell’s approval rating comes from within his own party.
Sen. McConnell will face a tough and well-funded challenger in Democrat Amy McGrath, but she is going to have to win over some Republican voters. McConnell is America’s most hated senator. McGrath is using this to raise huge sums of money, but in order to win in Kentucky, she is going to have to peel off some Republican support from McConnell in order to make the dream of ditching Mitch a reality.
