In the wake of the terrorist attack in New York City that left eight people dead, Donald Trump refuses to stop playing politics.
In a Twitter post late Wednesday, Trump shared what was essentially an advertisement for his new, knee-jerk proposal to end “chain migration” and the diversity lottery program that the terror suspect reportedly used to enter the country.
The president’s tweet:
In the video, which shows Trump during Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, the president proposed eliminating the immigration program, which was signed into law by George H. W. Bush in 1990.
Trump wants you to believe his renewed calls for tougher immigration measures are about national security, but we shouldn’t lose sight of what this is really about.
The loss of human life does not emotionally move Donald Trump. He doesn’t have a compassionate bone in his body.
After all, if he did, he wouldn’t have refused to take action in the wake of the Las Vegas shooting; he wouldn’t have waged war against a grieving, Gold Star widow; he wouldn’t have spent the last 24 hours trying to make political hay out of Wednesday’s attack.
Instead, the only thing Trump appears to be passionate about is exploiting tragedies for his own selfish gain, particularly when there is an ethnic element involved.
In the case of New York City, he sees an attack carried about by an ISIS-inspired individual of Middle Eastern descent, so he’s leaping to enact policy change, no matter how short-sighted and ineffective it may be.
What do we get from this president when a deranged, white gunman mows down hundreds of individuals at a concern in one of America’s most popular cities? Silence and inaction.
For this president, it’s never about expressing appropriate anger in the wake of an attack or calling for reforms to our laws that could save lives – it’s only about how best to rile up his base of blindfold-wearing supporters, who adore everything he does.
In New York yesterday, Donald Trump didn’t see a despicable act of violence or a heartbreaking tragedy. He saw a political opportunity, and now he’s taking advantage of it.
It’s shameful.
