House Freedom Caucus Chair Rep. Mark Meadows is warning that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan will lose their jobs if they don’t carry out Trump’s border wall and tax cuts for the rich agenda.
“Bottom line: if Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell can get the president’s agenda done, they can probably keep their jobs,” Meadows said in an interview.
“If Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell can’t get the president’s agenda done, I don’t know that they get to keep theirs, nor do I know if I get to keep mine. We’ve got to deliver. It’s critically important we do that in a way that conservatives have long espoused,” he said.
There is a big showdown coming in Congress over Trump’s border wall. Trump’s threat to shut down the government if Congress doesn’t fund his wall has set a chain reaction into motion that could lead to a government shutdown. A government shutdown would damage the economy, and the economy is the last issue that is keeping his approval ratings in the 30s. The House Freedom Caucus is standing with Trump, which makes it even more likely that a clean debt ceiling bill will be passed with the help of Democrats.
McConnell and Ryan may lose their jobs in leadership if Republicans decide to blame Congress instead of Trump for the party’s failures.
Trump is splitting the GOP into pieces, and Ryan and McConnell may pay the price for enabling Trump.
