Bernie Sanders Out Fundraises Hillary Clinton As Donations Keep Pouring In

Sen. Bernie Sanders has changed campaign fundraising forever by raising more money than former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton for the fourth consecutive month.

The Sanders campaign said in a statement:

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign on Friday launched a microsite to mark the senator’s historic fundraising effort, which includes raising money from more than 7.6 million contributions with more than 2.4 million individual donors.

Sanders’ campaign on Friday also filed a report with the Federal Election Commission showing it raised more than $212 million since the start of the campaign. Sanders raised more than $26.9 million in April, out-raising Secretary Clinton for the fourth month in a row.

The average contribution to the senator’s campaign is around $27. Only 5 percent of Sanders’ total came from donors who have given the maximum $2,700 an individual may donate to a candidate. Almost half of Hillary Clinton’s primary campaign committee money comes from maxed-out donors.

The donations are a sign that millions of supporters still believe in the message of Sen. Sanders. Bernie Sanders has had a lasting impact on how future campaigns will fundraise by proving that a candidate doesn’t need to have a super PAC or take Citizens United dark money to be successful.

Sen. Sanders wants to launch a political revolution, but the most revolutionary part of legacy could be a concept that was retro in its values. Sanders didn’t need but dollar fundraisers and bundlers. He has a community of individual donors who are committed to his message. Bernie Sanders is not going to be the Democratic nominee, but every American, who cares about getting the special interest money out of our elections owes him a huge debt of gratitude.

The Sanders fundraising model won’t work for every candidate, but by revealing the power of small donors, Bernie Sanders has made a major contribution to changing the perception of how money can be raised for a campaign.
