72 Percent Of Americans Say Benghazi Investigation Is A Political Sham

A CNN/ORC poll released on October 22nd finds that 72 percent of Americans believe the House Select Committee on Benghazi is mostly using the Benghazi investigation to achieve political gain. Only 23 percent of Americans think that the committee is conducting an objective investigation to find out what happened during the Benghazi attack.

The poll of 1,028 adult Americans, conducted from October 14th to the 17th, found widespread agreement that the Benghazi investigation has been a partisan sham. Americans recognize that the investigation was primarily aimed at politically damaging Hillary Clinton, rather than conducted as an honest inquiry into what happened in the 2012 Benghazi attack.

Not surprisingly, 85 percent of Democrats felt the Benghazi investigation was done primarily for political gain, with just 10 percent believing the committee had run an objective investigation. Independents, by a 75 to 20 percent margin, also felt the committee was acting primarily for political gain. Even a plurality of Republicans agreed that the investigation was politically motivated. 49 percent of Republicans felt the committee was seeking political gain, to 47 percent who thought the committee was conducting an impartial investigation.

The Republicans have sought to use the Benghazi Committee as a political cudgel to use against Hillary Clinton, but the GOP has been unable to land a decisive blow. Rather than knocking Clinton out of the presidential race, the House Republicans have instead found their political charade backfiring against them.

The committee’s lead character assassin, Trey Gowdy has become so distraught with his own failure to score political points from his sham investigation that he has taken to playing the victim. Without any apparent sense of irony, he now whines that his character is being assassinated, because people have had the temerity to question his transparent political motives.

House Republicans will continue to try to use the Benghazi investigation as a political tool to attack Hillary Clinton. Lazy and irresponsible journalists will continue to promote Republican talking points in the hopes that their “scandal coverage” will generate ratings. However, at some point the investigation will cease to matter. Nearly 3 in 4 Americans already recognize that the Benghazi investigation is a political witch hunt, rather than an inquiry into what transpired before, during, and after the 2012 Benghazi attack.
