Palin Tries to Rescue McCain on the Economy

Sarah Palin ran to rescue of John McCain and his comments about the economy during part one of her interview with Sean Hannity which will air tonight. She said that Democrats are unfairly attacking McCain for saying that the fundamentals of the economy are strong.

“It was an unfair attack on the verbiage that Senator McCain chose to use…He means our workforce. He means the ingenuity of the American people and of course that is strong and that is the foundation of our economy,” Palin said. You know, this defense might have a shred of credibility if McCain would have followed up his fundamentals comment any of the five times that he has made it by actually talking about workers.

According to Investopedia, fundamentals are defined as, “The qualitative and quantitative information that contributes to the economic well-being and the subsequent financial valuation of a company, security or currency. Analysts and investors analyze these fundamentals to develop an estimate as to whether the underlying asset is considered a worthwhile investment.” I don’t see workers mentioned in that definition, do you?

Everyone who has taken Econ 101 knows that the term economic fundamentals do not refer to workers. Before yesterday, McCain himself rarely referred to workers, but you know McCain loves the workers, and this is why he is going to tax their health insurance, that is if they still have health insurance after he eliminates the employer deduction. His love of workers is why he opposes equal pay for women, and targets most of his tax cuts towards corporations. His love of workers is why McCain’s voting record is full of support for union busting, and he consistently votes against minimum wage increases.

Besides the fact that the McCain camp has invented a new definition for the term economic fundamentals, McCain’s record shows not friendship for, or even concern, about workers. I guess it hard for McCain to be concerned about the struggles of working people when he has no idea what their lives are like. Not even, Mrs. Alaska hockey mom can save McCain on this one, because she knows even less about the economy than her running mate does.

We can expect Palin to offer nothing more than a robotic repetition of the campaign’s talking points. It is starting to look like McCain would have been better served to select a running mate who could have helped him out of this mess. Palin isn’t equipped for that kind of duty.

Having a Rob Portman or a Mitt Romney on the ticket would come in handy right now. The Republican ticket is like the blind leading the blind. Neither candidate has the slightest clue what they are talking about when it comes to the economy. The McCain campaign better come up with another distraction quickly, or they are in big trouble.
