Senate Republicans Are Furious After Nancy Pelosi Schools Trump In New NAFTA Negotiations

Last updated on September 25th, 2023 at 08:56 pm

Donald Trump is so desperate for a legislative accomplishment ahead of 2020 that he appears to have let House Speaker Nancy Pelosi school him in negotiations over a new North American trade agreement.

According to The Hill, Republican leadership in the Senate is openly expressing their concern that Trump folded like a cheap tent in order to get Democrats and labor unions to support a new NAFTA deal.

According to the report, “Two members of the Senate’s GOP leadership signaled on Monday there are concerns among Republicans that President Trump’s trade deal with Mexico and Canada may have shifted too far to the left as part of an effort to get Democrats on board.”

More from The Hill:

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), an adviser to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), said a deal that the AFL-CIO’s endorsed “could be problematic,” but vowed to reserve judgement until senators got a presentation on the agreement.

“I just hope he hasn’t gone too far in Speaker Pelosi’s direction, and the AFL-CIO’s direction that he might lose some support here,” he said. “My concern is that what the administration presented has now been moved demonstrably to Democrats, the direction that they wanted.”

Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), the No. 2 Republican in the upper chamber, said he hoped senators would get a briefing on a finalized agreement this week, and that Republicans wanted to know what concessions were made to get Democrats on board.

“I mean if they got the unions my assumption is that there are going to be a lot of things that were changed from the last time we’ve seen anything on this. So yeah, I think there’s a potential that you could have in their … desire to try to satisfy Democrats in the House, labor unions cost you some Republican support depending on what those changes are,” Thune said.

Trump is in the weakest position of his presidency

A majority of the American people have never supported Donald Trump, not during and the campaign and not since he’s taken office. This limited political appeal has always made him a weak and ineffective leader.

But as the impeachment inquiry continues to paint a clear and damning portrait of the president abusing his power, not only does Trump still have dismal support but a majority of the country wants to see him impeached and removed from office.

In other words, he is in the weakest political position of his presidency – so weak that he just let Nancy Pelosi roll right over him in the new NAFTA negotiations.
