Even in the thick of an impeachment inquiry that continues to expose damning evidence against Donald Trump, the Republican National Committee announced on Thursday that it will host its winter meeting at one of the president’s properties – another example of the president using his office to boost his brands.
According to The Hill, “The annual RNC gathering will take place at Trump National Doral outside Miami,” which is the same Trump property that the president initially chose to host the G7 summit before quickly reversing the decision.
More from The Hill:
The winter meetings will take place in January. Doral has been the chosen site for some time, as the RNC signed the contract for the venue in March.
Most of the RNC’s recent meetings have taken place at locations not owned by Trump, though the organization did hold its 2018 summer gathering at Doral.
Still, a spokesman asserted that the site had more to do with logistics than serving the president’s brand.
“The media is obsessed with our spending at Trump properties and has covered it ad nauseam. As we have stated multiple times, we continue to hold events at them because they have fantastic service and secure spaces that fit our needs,” RNC spokesman Michael Ahrens said in a statement.
As The Washington Post reported earlier this year, Trump’s Doral resort – like his presidency – is failing. The report notes that the property is the president’s biggest moneymaker overall, yet net operating income as fallen by a stunning 69 percent in two years.
Therefore, it’s really no surprise why – at seemingly every turn – the president tries to use his office to boost his properties, whether it’s hosting the G7 or RNC events.
Trump knows that if he weren’t in the White House, none of these events would be taking place at his properties, so he’s milking it as much as he can for as long as he can.
