Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke dropped out of the race for the Democratic nomination and showed the party’s singular unity of purpose to beat Donald Trump.
O’Rourke tweeted:
The writing was on the wall for the O’Rourke campaign when they couldn’t qualify for the November Democratic debate. O’Rourke will always be remembered as a presidential candidate for his strong stance on gun control inspired by the horrific mass shooting in El Paso.
What worked for Beto O’Rourke in Texas didn’t transfer to the Democratic primary. Outside of the issue of guns, former Rep. O’Rourke had a problem with breaking out from the crowded field.
O’Rourke’s statement shines a light on the fact that Democrats are in no mood for a divided primary. Democratic voters want to come together as quickly as possible to focus on defeating Donald Trump in November 2020.
Beto O’Rourke will be second-guessed as many in the party wanted him to abandon his presidential bid sooner and run for Senate, but there can be no doubt that he poured his heart and soul into his campaign, and he will work just as hard to help try to turn Texas blue in 2020.
