Trump is the first president that a majority of Americans want to impeach before the House of Representatives has made a recommendation on impeachment.
According to the FiveThirtyEight average of impeachment polls, 50.3% of Americans support impeaching Trump, and 43.8% do not support impeaching the president.
The Pew Research Center noted that a majority of Americans did not support impeaching Richard Nixon until after the House recommended it, “Only in early August, following the House Judiciary Committee’s recommendation in July that Nixon be impeached and the Supreme Court’s decision that he surrender his audio tapes, did a clear majority – 57% – come to the view that the president should be removed from office.”
CNN has been asking the impeachment question for all presidents since Clinton, and Trump is the first that a majority wanted to impeach, “Support for impeaching George W. Bush never went higher than 30%. Support for impeaching Obama, who was relentlessly demonized by an entire conservative media cottage industry, never went above 33%. The Bill Clinton impeachment model won’t work for Trump, because support for impeaching Clinton never went beyond 29%.”
Impeachment carries few political pitfalls for House Democrats because a majority of the country already supports impeaching Trump. Every day new evidence emerges that builds the case against Donald Trump. Democrats don’t have to worry about selling impeachment to a majority of the country because the majority is ready to impeach Trump without hearing any more evidence.
For the first time in history, a majority of Americans are ahead of Congress on impeachment.
