Republicans Are On A Sinking Ship As A Pro-Impeachment Wave Is Sweeping The Nation

Last updated on September 25th, 2023 at 08:55 pm

Republicans in Congress may be sticking with Donald Trump as the Ukraine scandal buries the White House, but the American people are not.

According to a slew of new polling data, a wave of pro-impeachment support has swept the country , with strong majorities now supporting the Democrats’ inquiry.

As MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki pointed out on Tuesday, Democrats “have to like what they’re seeing in terms of the public opinion polling.”

Kornacki said:

Three new polls that came out today show just how much the ground has shifted when it comes to impeachment. Let me show you what I mean. First of all, remember two different questions that are being asked in these polls. The first question is not full-fledged impeachment. … The first question is just the impeachment inquiry. Democrats said Congress is now, the House is now launching an impeachment inquiry. Committees going to investigate him, all of these sorts of things. … The three new polls today, look at this. 53 in Quinnipiac, 55 in the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll and 58 – the highest number we’ve seen yet – in the Washington Post poll supporting the impeachment inquiry. Low 40s, high 30s in terms of opposition. This is pretty solid support for the impeachment inquiry. Put this in bigger context, over the last two weeks here’s all the polls that have come out about an impeachment inquiry. … Count them up, one, two, three, four, five, six of those eight have outright majority support for the impeachment inquiry, over 50%, and the other two still plurality support, 49-43, 49-46. So eight polls have come out on the inquiry and in all eight polls there’s more support than opposition for the inquiry and in 6 of the 8 there’s outright majority support. So Democrats, in terms of taking that step, they have to like what they’re seeing in term of the public opinion polling.

Republicans could be making a severe miscalculation

In the months before Democrats finally decided to pull the trigger on impeachment, there was constant debate over whether launching such an inquiry would backfire on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her party.

Now it appears the opposite is true. Not only do the American people support the move by the Democrats, but they increasingly believe Trump’s behavior warrants his removal from office.

By sticking with Donald Trump when the majority of the country is quickly fleeing him, Republicans could be making a severe miscalculation. Not only will history judge them harshly for their cowardice, but voters likely will in 2020.
