Sen. Mazie. Hirono Calls For The Immediate Impeachment Of Brett Kavanaugh

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) is calling on House Democrats to immediately take up impeachment proceedings against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Sen. Hirono said in a statement provided to PoliticusUSA:

Brett Kavanaugh should never have been confirmed to the Supreme Court. It was plain to me and many others at the time that the FBI ‘investigation’ into the serious, corroborated allegations of sexual assault by Justice Kavanaugh was a sham. New reporting from the New York Times further proves it.

In normal times, I would call on the Department of Justice’s Inspector General to fully investigate the FBI’s failures in this matter. But these are not normal times. The House Judiciary Committee should immediately begin an impeachment inquiry to determine whether Justice Kavanaugh lied to Congress and why the FBI wasn’t permitted to investigate all credible allegations against him.

Sen. Hirono was correct on both points. Brett Kavanaugh should have never been confirmed to the Supreme Court, and these are not normal times, so no one should expect normal processes and procedures to be effective. Sen. Amy Klobuchar said that the House should get all documents and begin an investigation into Kavanaugh , but Sen. Hirono is the first to call for outright impeachment.

Trump is in a frenzy because he views Kavanaugh as one of his meager presidential “accomplishments.” (Please, no one tell him that something isn’t an accomplishment if the Constitution requires a president to do it.)

Kavanaugh was barely confirmed the first time around. If he faces impeachment, it is likely that he would not be convicted, but it is far from a sure thing.

The GOP’s Brett Kavanaugh problem is not going away. More women are coming forward, and impeachment doesn’t seem as unlikely as it was a few days ago.
