The House Judiciary Committee has officially subpoenaed former White House staff secretary Rob Porter as part of their impeachment probe into Trump obstruction of justice.
House Judiciary Committee chairman Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) said in a statement provided to PoliticusUSA:
As I’ve said before, any other American would have been prosecuted based on the evidence Special Counsel Mueller uncovered in his report. Rob Porter was prominently featured in the Special Counsel’s description of President Trump’s efforts to obstruct justice by directing then-White House Counsel Don McGahn to fire the Special Counsel, and then ordering him to lie about it.
The Committee intends to hold hearings and obtain testimony over the coming months as part of its efforts to hold the President accountable as we move forward with our investigation into obstruction, corruption and abuse of power by Trump and his associates. This will help the Committee determine whether to recommend articles of impeachment against the President or other Article 1 remedies. No one is above the law.
Interestingly, Chairman Nadler used the term impeachment in his statement. It should be clear to all that the majority on the Judiciary Committee is gathering evidence so that they can make their decision on articles of impeachment. Those who are calling for an impeachment probe are missing the point. There is already an impeachment investigation that is in its first phase. Whether or not the House decides to impeach Trump is a different question, but the next step will be for the impeachment investigation to become official, and the Judiciary Committee will have more evidence gathering tools and power.
The impeachment process is moving forward. It is a matter of whether Trump will be impeached before voters have the chance to vote him out of office.
