Trump is trying to distract from white supremacist mass shootings by declaring Antifa a terrorist organization.
Trump tweeted:
Major consideration is being given to naming ANTIFA an “ORGANIZATION OF TERROR.” Portland is being watched very closely. Hopefully the Mayor will be able to properly do his job!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 17, 2019
Trump’s tweet came straight from a leaked Republican memo of talking points that are intended to minimize white supremacy while blaming the left for gun violence and mass shootings.
Compare Trump’s tweet to this quote from the memo, “White nationalism and racism are pure evil and cannot be tolerated in any form. We also can’t excuse violence from the left such as the El Paso shooter, the recent Colorado shooters, the Congressional baseball shooter, Congresswoman Giffords’ shooter and Antifa.”
The tweet is a reminder that Trump isn’t always the undisciplined fool that some Democrats think he is. Republicans have come up with a party-wide strategy to blame the left for gun violence and mass shootings.
Since Trump might not get to run against a “socialist” if Joe Biden is the Democratic nominee, he is going to run against one of Fox News’s favorite boogeymen. Fox and conservative media have been using Antifa as their latest “New Black Panthers” scare tactic for years.
Trump is trying to take the heat off of the NRA and his white supremacist supporters for mass shooting by declaring Antifa a terrorist organization.
It is a smokescreen to distract from the fact that Republicans are going to do nothing about gun violence.
