Mariann Edgar Budde, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington refused to answer when she was asked if Trump would no longer be welcomed at the National Cathedral.
In an interview Tuesday, WUSA9 asked Mariann Edgar Budde, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, if there would ever be a point where the president was no longer welcome at the Cathedral.
The interview took on added urgency – and Bishop Budde ultimately declined to comment.
“I’m not going to address that here,” she said during the phone interview from Minneapolis.
“I’m not going to comment on that right now. So, my answer is, I don’t have a response to that right now, I don’t want to go there.”
The National Cathedral issued a statement condemning Trump’s racism that was met with wide praise.
Leadership at the Washington National Cathedral is worried that Trump’s racist rhetoric could escalate and devolve into violence.
They are concerned that Trump’s presence may pose a threat to public safety if he is in the Cathedral.
Never has a US president been banned from a house of worship for racist language that could provoke and incite violence. Trump believes that he is winning with his racist attacks, but what is actually happening is that he is isolating himself from the vast majority of the country who like the National Cathedral want nothing to do with his racism and worry about the threat he could pose to public safety.
