Top Democrat To Block Funding For Trump Census Citizenship Question

Rep. José Serrano (D-NY), Chairman of the Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS) Appropriations Subcommittee said that he would block funding for a reprint of the Census to include a citizenship question.

House Democrats Will Block Funding For A Census Reprint

Rep. Serrano said in a statement:

It seems like the Trump Administration will stop at nothing in its efforts to undermine the completion of a fair and accurate 2020 Census. On June 27th, our Nation’s highest court rejected the Trump Administration’s attempt to include the citizenship question on the 2020 form, and last week, the Departments of Commerce and Justice confirmed they would oblige. However, not only does the Trump Administration keep changing its story and now plans to try and reinsert the question, but it also appears willing to do so at literally any cost.

Because printing of the Census form without the citizenship question has now started, amending the form could potentially cost hundreds of millions of additional taxpayer dollars, in addition to untold millions of dollars for additional non-response follow-up resources next year. As Chairman of the Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Subcommittee, I want to make one thing clear: I have no intention of allowing this flagrant waste of money. I once again urge the Trump Administration to give up this fight and allow for a depoliticized and accurate census, as we always have.

The Trump administration admitted that they don’t have the money to either reprint the Census or do an addendum that would include the citizenship question. The Census is already being printed and each day that goes by without the citizenship question being included makes it less likely that it will be in the Census.

Rep. Serrano was right. Reprinting the Census would be a giant waste of money, and more importantly, Trump can’t do it without an appropriation from the House.

The citizenship question isn’t happening. Trump can tweet and stomp his feet, but Democrats aren’t going to give him the money for a Census citizenship question.
