Eric Swalwell To Be The First 2020 Democrat To Drop Out Of The Race

Last updated on September 25th, 2023 at 02:11 pm

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) has called an afternoon press conference where he is expected to end his presidential campaign and run for House reelection.

Eric Swalwell expected to end his presidential campaign

According to The Mercury News, “Eric Swalwell has failed to gain traction in the presidential polls, canceled Fourth of July campaign events in New Hampshire at the last minute, and seems likely to be excluded from the second Democratic debate later this month. Now the East Bay congressman has scheduled a news conference at his Dublin campaign headquarters Monday afternoon, sparking speculation that he’s dropping his long-shot White House bid.”

The LA Times also reported:

Eric Swalwell Couldn’t Break Through

In the next few months, there will be more candidates dropping out of the 2020 Democratic field. Rep. Swalwell is a fine congressman and a member of both the House Intelligence and Judiciary Committees, but he has not been able to gain any momentum for his presidential campaign. Swalwell wasn’t going to make the second Democratic debate in Detroit at the end of July, and he had no chance of making the September debate the more stringent criteria for participation.

The Democratic field will likely be cut in half.

In reality, there are only five serious contenders for the nomination. Former vice president Joe Biden , Sens. Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Kamala Harris, along with Mayor Pete Buttigieg. The rest of the field is living on borrowed time.

Running for the Democratic nomination in 2020 is like playing with house money for many of these candidates. Rep. Swalwell never caught fire with voters, and he is making the smart decision to focus on his important work in the House.
