Massachusetts senator and 2020 presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren tore Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to shreds on Tuesday for not understanding America’s system of checks and balances.
In an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, the Democratic lawmaker said that Robert Mueller made it clear that he is leaving it to Congress to hold Trump accountable.
“Mueller makes these facts absolutely clear in his report,” Warren said of the obstruction evidence against Trump. “So when Mitch McConnell today took to the floor and said, ‘Case over, case over. We’re done.’ No, we are not.”

Sen. Warren said:
Mueller makes these facts absolutely clear in his report. It is pretty clear when you read it that the only reason, as I read it, that he did not actually bring an indictment because he clearly has all the facts, is he was following the Justice Department of the Trump administration saying a sitting president cannot be criminally indicted. But he served up on a silver platter all of those facts to the United States Congress. Because in a constitutional system with checks and balances, it’s up to Congress to make sure that the president is not above the law. So when Mitch McConnell today took to the floor and said, ‘Case over, case over. We’re done.’ No, we are not. No. And it’s time to stand up and say so.
While William Barr has done his best to protect Trump from his post in the Justice Department, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is spearheading the cover-up effort in Congress.
With his speech on the Senate floor on Tuesday, McConnell is essentially saying that Congress is no longer part of a separate and equal branch of government meant to provide crucial checks and balances over a lawless president.
Instead, with McConnell leading the GOP Senate, the upper chamber of Congress has essentially become an extension of the Trump White House.
If Mitch McConnell believes the Congress should give up its oversight authority and bow down to Trump, then he’s in the wrong line of work.
