Facebook banned several high profile alt right supporters of Trump from Facebook and Instagram for hate speech violations.
Facebook Inc. said it’s banning a number of controversial far-right figures, including Alex Jones, Milo Yiannopoulos and Laura Loomer, for violating the social-media company’s policies on hate speech and promoting violence.
The company is also blocking religious leader Louis Farrakhan, who is known for sharing anti-Semitic views; Paul Nehlen, a white nationalist who ran for Congress in 2018; and conspiracy theorist Paul Joseph Watson.
“We’ve always banned individuals or organizations that promote or engage in violence and hate, regardless of ideology,” a Facebook representative said Thursday in a statement. “The process for evaluating potential violators is extensive and it is what led us to our decision to remove these accounts today.”
Farrakhan is not a supporter of Trump but has spread his own extremist and hateful views.
The Trumps have appeared on Alex Jones’s platforms for years. The alt-right figures that were banned have all supported Donald Trump. It is difficult for the Republican Party to maintain the unbelievable position that they are not the party of hate speech when their candidates and media figures are getting banned from social media platforms.
Expect Trump to go on a Twitter rant about censorship, while ignoring the fact that there should be room in every discussion for liberal and conservative views, but conspiracy theories and hate speech should have no home in our national discourse.
