House Judiciary Committee chairman, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) will hold a vote on allowing lawyers to question Attorney General Barr on Thursday.
CNN reported, “The House Judiciary Committee is moving forward with its plan for staff attorneys to question Attorney General William Barr at a Thursday hearing on special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, even as the attorney general is threatening not to attend the hearing over the proposed format. House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat, scheduled a Tuesday committee vote to allow an additional hour of questioning at Thursday’s hearing. The vote would allow members or staff to question Barr during the extra hour, which would be divided between Democrats and Republicans.”
Nadler is calling out Barr. Either he shows up to the hearing as scheduled, or he will be subpoenaed.
The Trump administration is stonewalling and stalling. The Attorney General should have nothing to fear from answering questions under oath from lawyers if he did nothing wrong. The problem is that Barr almost certainly did something wrong in the handling of the Mueller report, and he doesn’t want to allow legal experts to nail him down and provide information that could both blow the lid off of the White House’s no collusion, no obstruction claims, and show how involved Barr allowed the White House to be in the release of the Mueller report.
Nadler made a statement by scheduling the vote. Barr is not going to be allowed to dictate the terms of congressional oversight.
The showdown between the House and the White House is escalating, and Democrats are not going to be intimidated or bullied by Trump and Barr’s demands.
