Former GOP Congressman Tells House Dems To Ignore The Fox Bubble And Move Toward Impeachment

Former Republican Congressman David Jolly on Saturday urged Democrats to ignore GOP talking heads who parrot their Donald Trump-defending talking points on Fox News.

Instead, he said they should go all in on reigning in Trump after Robert Mueller’s redacted report laid out a series of a long list of disturbing and unethical conduct on the part of the president and his team.

In an interview on MSNBC’s AM Joy, the ex-GOP lawmaker said Republicans have already shown they don’t care about the rule of law.

“In the midterm elections, you had a lot of people who traditionally don’t vote for Democrats who said, you know what, I’m going to vote for Democrats because we have got to reign in this president,” former Rep. Jolly said. “If Democrats fail to do so, a lot of voters are going to be left with no confidence in the majority party in the House.”

Rep. Jolly said:

It is fascinating, every time you hear one of these Republican have to answer questions, they’ve got their talkers where the president was found not culpable, if you will, but when you really get to the edge on issues of obstruction and misconduct, they blink. They really do. They really blink, and they don’t have an answer. I think what it connotes to the American people is there is a certain amount of corruption that they’re abetting with this president. What I would say, and I’m not comparing the two parties. There is daylight between the two parties. Democrats are at least trying to wrestle with how to hold the president accountable. But I would say there are lessons for Democrats in seeing how Republicans are handling this because in the midterm elections you had a lot of people who traditionally don’t vote for Democrats who said, you know what, I’m going to vote for Democrats because we have got to reign in this president. To our previous conversation, if Democrats fail to do so, a lot of voters are going to be be left with no confidence in the majority party in the House.

Holding Trump accountable is more important than politics

There are valid arguments to be made over the strategy House Democrats should take to reign in Trump and hold him accountable for the damning conduct laid out in the Mueller report.

But doing nothing is not an option, particularly after Democrats were successful in 2018 based in part on their promise to hold this president accountable. The American people expect them to be a check on Trump’s abuses of power.

As former Rep. Jolly also said on Saturday, “How about we ask Congress to make a constitutional calculus and then let the politics sort itself out?”
