Trump claimed that there is only one person running the Department of Homeland Security and that is him.
Trump told reporters who asked him about making Stephen Miller DHS Secretary, “Stephen is an excellent guy. He’s a wonderful person. People don’t know him . . . He’s been with me from the beginning. He’s a brilliant man. And frankly, there’s only one person that’s running it. You know who that is? It’s me.”

If Trump is running Homeland Security, the US is in big trouble
The recent purge at DHS indicates that Trump wants people there who will follow his orders, no matter how illegal, do what they are told. Trump has turned the Department of Homeland Security into a tool for his border obsession. No one can remember the last time the president spoke about the important intelligence and anti-terrorism work that is happening at DHS.
Trump is only interested in using DHS to close the border, and while border security is an important part piece of what DHS does, it is not their only mission. Homeland Security is the third largest department in the entire federal government behind only the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs. It a massive department, and one that Donald Trump has absolutely no ability to run.
The president was likely just empty bragging again. A man who has probably never read a full book in his life isn’t running Homeland Security, but after Trump’s purge, DHS is understaffed in key roles, and this can only hurt the nation’s national security.
