Even though Democratic leadership has been reluctant to move forward on impeachment, Rachel Maddow explained on Tuesday that it may be the only way to get Robert Mueller’s evidence.
During her broadcast, the MSNBC host explained that if Barr continues to refuse to ask the courts to give Mueller’s evidence to Congress, the House Judiciary Committee may have to formally open an impeachment inquiry in order to get it.
“Democrats, of course, have not wanted to open impeachment proceedings against President Trump, basically for political reasons, but it’s possible they might need to now if they want a court to give them Mueller’s evidence,” Maddow said.

Maddow said:
William Barr’s refusal to ask the court to release that material to Congress, and Nadler saying, okay, then we’ll do it, it raises a brand-new prospect that we have not had to face before. It raises the prospect that one of the things that the House Judiciary Committee might have to do is they might have to open an impeachment inquiry into Preesident Trump, as a formal matter, so the court would recognize them as being in the midst of a judicial proceeding that could legally receive that grand jury stuff. They would not have to open this grand jury proceeding because they’re intent on impeaching the president, right right now, they would have to open it up just so they could receive that material from the court. Democrats, of course, have not wanted to open impeachment proceedings against President Trump, basically for political reasons, but it’s possible they might need to now if they want a court to give them Mueller’s evidence.
As William Barr continues to act as a shield for Donald Trump, Democrats are increasingly signaling that they will go to the mat in order to get their hands on the Mueller report and its underlying evidence.
As PoliticusUSA’s Jason Easley noted earlier, Democrats are planning to sue if Barr refuses to release an unredacted version of Mueller’s report.
While the attorney general may think his actions are protecting his new boss, they are only increasing the chances that Democrats will formally open an impeachment inquiry.
