Rachel Maddow Says Trump Just Made Two Moves That Will Doom Him In 2020

Rachel Maddow said that the Trump administration made two major decisions on Tuesday that could doom his reelection chances come 2020.

The first, of course, is to try – again – to dismantle the Affordable Care Act and take health insurance coverage away from millions of Americans.

The second move by the administration was to take money from the United States military to for the construction of a wall on the southern border – a wall, I might add, that is incredibly unpopular.

Maddow sarcastically called Trump’s moves a “nice double-barrelled strategy for the president’s reelection campaign.”

Maddow said:

So you take those two things together and I mean, it has been a day with lots of news in it, but it’s also been a day when a lot of news that broke is big news. I mean, among other things, we learned today that the Trump administration’s legal firepower from here on out, from here at least until the next election in 2020, is going to be devoted in the courts to trying to take health insurance away from tens of millions of Americans, to make them all uninsured and they’ll be fighting to take money away from U.S. troops to instead build Trump a wall that most Americans do not want. Which is, I guess, a nice double-barrelled strategy for the president’s reelection campaign, I’m sure they think that is.

Trump is making a major miscalculation ahead of 2020

Trump’s strategy for 2020 appears to be to double down on what he has spent his presidency doing, which is to appeal only to his political base.

In other words, his math skills aren’t so good, because his base – somewhere between 30 to 40 percent of the country – does not represent a majority of the population.

It is this same strategy of firing up his base – remember the caravan? – that failed in 2018 after Democrats saw their biggest gains in the House since 1974.

In the end, it turns out that whining about an unpopular border wall and working to take health care away from 20+ million Americans isn’t just bad policy; it’s horrible politics.
