Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough expressed astonishment this morning that Donald Trump continued to lie to a group of Republican donors even when confronted with video evidence that proves he did.
Trump kept insisting to the donors that he hadn’t called Apple CEO Tim Cook by the wrong name, “Tim Apple.”
But the president’s flub was recorded on video that was shared across social media and other news sites.
In the video clip Trump mistakenly called the tech executive “Tim Apple,” which led to widespread mocking across the internet. But Trump denied making the error Friday during a speech to Republican donors.
“In a move that stunned even his own donors, President Trump denies what you just heard,” said “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski, after rolling video of the mistake.
“It never happened,” Scarborough said. “Don’t believe your eyes.”
“He insists he said Tim Cook’s name correctly, and it’s just the fake news media playing a big trick on everyone,” Brzezinski said. “Added to the sad steady march toward 10,000 lies in office — literally that number, that’s where we are.”
Scarborough said some of the president’s supporters still don’t believe he lies, although there’s plain evidence in this case that Trump was dishonest.
“I love when people say, ‘Oh, he doesn’t lie, give me an example,’” Scarborough said. “You have it there on videotape, and as his donors were saying this weekend at Mar-A-Lago, it’s on videotape. It’s on videotape yet he calls it fake. Again, there are those who believe what they believe. Let those who have ears hear.”
Here is a description of the incident as first reported by Axios:
“Republican donors in attendance called it one of Trump’s weirdest lies ever. On Friday night, under a tent erected over the pool at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, President Trump claimed the media were spreading “fake news” when they said he called the CEO of Apple “Tim Apple.”
“Trump told the donors that he actually said “Tim Cook Apple” really fast, and the “Cook” part of the sentence was soft. But all you heard from the “fake news,” he said, was “Tim Apple.”
