Morning Joe Panel Accuses GOP of ‘Falling for a Cult Leader’

This morning on “Morning Joe,” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski slammed Republicans for their continued silence on a terror plot against prominent Democrats.

They also hammered the GOP members of Congress for going along with President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency.

Scarborough, Brzezinski and guest Jennifer Rubin, a conservative columnist with the Washington Post, agreed that the Republican Party has become a cult of personality under Trump. Brzezinski asked:

“Have you fallen for a cult leader? Does he have ahold of your brain? Can you speak for yourselves, Republicans?”

Last week U.S. law enforcement officials arrested a U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant who described himself as a white nationalist and who had amassed a cache of weapons to “murder innocent civilians.

Scarborough was among those allegedly targeted for assassination by the Coast Guard lieutenant. He asked Rubin her opinion about the decline of the Republican Party under Trump.

“We have criticized the party so much for bowing down to Donald Trump, but I do have to say this is such a bright, obviously bright line to cross that if you vote for this national emergency, never, ever raise the constitution again and pretend you are a defender of it because this is a clear violation,” Scarborough said.

Rubin agreed that the president’s plan to fund his border wall violated the U.S. Constitution, saying:

“Listening to (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi yesterday introducing the measure and speaking about the separations of powers and importance of our Constitution, she sounded like Republicans used to talk, but, of course, Republicans don’t talk that way anymore.”

Then she added her opinion about what had happened to the party to which she used to belong and support:

“They have become a cult and they simply follow Donald Trump, meandering through the desert, following him, making excuses for him, enabling him. It really is a defining moment for the party and for these individuals.”
