Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) thinks that the Green New Deal is bad for Democrats in 2020, which is why he will be bringing it to the Senate floor for a vote.
McConnell said:
As NBC’s Kasie Hunt noted, this is all 2020 politics:
Trump and McConnell are tipping their 2020 hand. If Democrats nominate anyone not named Joe Biden, the Republicans are going to run against that nominee as being a far-left socialist. Many of the announced 2020 Democratic contenders support the Green New Deal. McConnell’s move is an effort to make Senators like Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, and Amy Klobuchar look like socialists.
Republicans don’t have accomplishments or an agenda to run on, so they are going to demonize the Democrats as a threat to freedom and capitalism. It is ironic that the party that has been infiltrated by Russia is going to run a presidential campaign based on the great socialist menace, but this is where Republicans are. They can’t run on Trump’s popularity. They can’t run on their success governing. They can’t run on hope and optimism, so Republicans are going to run on making Democrats look worse than they are.
It is a strategy that rarely works for an incumbent party.
Republicans have nothing else, so Mitch McConnell is leading the war against imaginary socialism.
