Democratic Bill To End The Shutdown Got More Votes Than Trump’s Wall

More Senators voted for the Senate Democratic plan to end the shutdown with a clean funding bill than voted for Trump’s wall funding.

CNBC has the final vote totals for each measure, “A GOP-backed measure to fund Trump’s border wall and offer limited legal protections for some immigrants failed in a 50-47 vote. Three senators — Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republicans Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Mike Lee of Utah — broke with their parties. A plan supported by Democrats fared better, with a 52-44 vote. Five Republican senators supported it: Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Susan Collins of Maine, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Johnny Isakson of Georgia, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Mitt Romney of Utah.”

The Will Of The Senate Is No Wall

The same Republican-controlled body that wouldn’t fund Trump’s wall during the first two years of his term is still showing no interest in funding his wall with the government shut down . There was a message being sent by the five Republican Senators who voted with the Democrats on their proposal. The moderates want the government open, and Trump’s wall is not a priority for them at all.

There is no enthusiasm among Republicans for Trump’s wall or his government shutdown.

Senate Republicans don’t look like they can hold out much longer. At some point, they are going to break with Trump and McConnell and push to end this government shutdown without the wall.

Democrats are in the Senate minority, and their plan got more votes than that of the president’s own majority party in the Senate.

The endgame is coming, and the government shutdown looks like it will end in a crushing defeat for Donald Trump.
