Richard Painter, former ethics attorney under George W. Bush, had some advice for Donald Trump on Saturday: Resign the presidency and start working on a plea deal of his own.
According to Painter, it’s clear that Trump has committed crimes and that Robert Mueller and the southern district of New York are on the verge of busting him for them.
“I really do believe it’s time for President Trump to work out a plea deal, resign the presidency, take lower charges, and let this country move on,” Painter said. “This is gonna be a very, very ugly two years if he insists on staying in the White House and fighting criminal charges that are inevitable.”

Painter said:
But now we’ve got Bob Mueller catching up with the president. We’ve got the Southern District of New York. We’ve got the New York attorney general. Criminal investigations, multiple charges on multiple fronts against his top associates. I really do believe it’s time for President Trump to work out a plea deal, resign the presidency, take lower charges, and let this country move on. This is gonna be a very, very ugly two years if he insists on staying in the White House and fighting criminal charges that are inevitable. It’s very clear that he’s committed multiple crimes. He ought to be working on his plea deal while we work on putting together the country again.
Things are only going to get worse for Trump
If Donald Trump thinks his legal troubles will improve over the next two years, he’s sorely mistaken.
Not only does Mueller and New York’s southern district appear to be targeting Trump and his family directly, but the incoming Democratic Congress is prepping to launch investigations into other areas of the president’s past that could make the current probes look like a cake walk.
Trump should resign the presidency and use his own time to fight his increasingly perilous legal battles so the United States can finally begin to recover from this dark chapter in American history.
