North Carolina Democrat Calls For New Election After Blatant GOP Vote-Rigging Scheme

Democratic candidate Dan McCready said on Thursday night that if the pending investigation into the GOP vote-rigging scheme in North Carolina’s 9th congressional finds that the results have been tainted, then there should be a new election.

In an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, McCready applauded the state board of elections for refusing to certify the results but said they must continue to push forward to ensure that no voter has their voice stolen from them.

“Should this be a tainted election, then we absolutely should have a new election,” the Democrat said.

It took a lot of courage, Rachel, for the Republicans on that board to join the Democrats and independents on that board and unanimously fail to certify this race and then also in a bipartisan manner start an investigation. And that investigation is so important. It’s important that it be a full and a thorough investigation. And should this be a tainted election, then we absolutely should have a new election.

Nancy Pelosi pledges not to seat the Republican if the results were rigged

Dan McCready isn’t alone in his fight to make sure a congressional election isn’t stolen. As the Associated Press reported on Thursday, soon-to-be House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she will use her power to protect the integrity of the democratic process.

The AP reports, “U.S. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday the House ‘retains the right to decide who is seated’ and could take the ‘extraordinary step’ of calling for a new election if the winner isn’t clear.

The AP added, “Pelosi, who’s nominated to become House speaker when Democrats take control in January, said that ‘any member-elect can object to the seating and the swearing-in of another member elect.’ She also noted the investigative power of the House to determine race winners.”

Ultimately, as the state elections board in North Carolina has demonstrated, this isn’t about politics. It’s about protecting the right to vote for every American.

Not only should a new election be held if the results were tampered with – which increasingly seems to be the case – but those responsible for the ballot-stuffing operation should be held accountable.
