Republicans Try To Blackmail Democrats Into Giving Trump More Judges For Mueller Protection Vote

Senate Majority Whip Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said that Republicans might allow a vote to protect Mueller if Republican Sen. Jeff Flake and Democrats give Trump more judges.

Roll Call reported:

Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn said Tuesday there’s a chance the Senate will actually vote on legislation designed to protect Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III.

The Republican from Texas suggested that may be the price paid in order to get an agreement with retiring Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona to let more of President Donald Trump’s judicial nominations through the Judiciary Committee.

A bipartisan group of Senators tried again on Wednesday to force a vote on the Mueller protection bill, but they were stopped by Sen. Mike Lee who objected to their request for unanimous consent.

Republicans want to get more of these judges confirmed before Congress recesses for the holidays because if they don’t get them done this year, they have to resubmit the nominations at the beginning of the next Congress.

The price for a vote on protecting Mueller is to allow Trump to continue to fill the federal with more conservative judges.

House Democrats have a better idea. They aren’t going to vote for the must-pass government funding bill unless it includes protections for Mueller. Democrats aren’t going to allow the security of the Mueller investigation to be held hostage.

If Republicans want to keep the government open, they are going to have to vote to protect Robert Mueller.
