Paul Manafort violated his plea deal with Robert Mueller in an apparent effort to get a pardon out of Donald Trump.
Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, repeatedly lied to federal investigators in breach of a plea agreement he signed two months ago, the special counsel’s office said in a court filing late on Monday.
Prosecutors working for the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, said Mr. Manafort’s “crimes and lies” about “a variety of subject matters” relieve them of all promises they made to him in the plea agreement. But under the terms of the agreement, Mr. Manafort cannot withdraw his guilty plea.
Paul Manafort probably saw Brett Kavanaugh get confirmed to the Supreme Court and Matthew Whitaker replace Jeff Sessions as attorney general and thought that the tide was turning in his favor. Manafort is still trying to scam his way out of trouble. He thinks that if he can stonewall Mueller, Trump will either pardon him or end the investigation.
Manafort wants a pardon, but he doesn’t seem to understand Trump.
Trump would never pardon Manafort unless he had to.
If Donald Trump can let Paul Manafort rot in prison, that is exactly what he will do. It costs Trump nothing to leave Manafort in prison, but he would trigger a crisis that could lead to impeachment if he issues a pardon.
Paul Manafort lied to Mueller to prove his loyalty to Trump, but Trump isn’t going to pardon him.
Manafort will likely die in prison because he is still looking to beat the rap with a con instead of accepting punishment for his crimes.
