After years of politically violent rhetoric that appears to have inspired the bombs that have been sent to Democrats and CNN, Trump now wants national unity.
At a White House event on the opioid crisis, Trump said:
I’d like to begin today’s remarks by providing an update on the suspicious packages and devices mailed to current and former high ranking government officials. The safety of the American people is my highest and absolute priority. I’ve just concluded a briefing with the FBI, department of justice, department of homeland security and U.S. Secret as we speak the packages are being inspected by top explosive experts and a major federal investigation is now underway. The full weight of our government is being deployed to conduct this investigation and bring those responsible for these despicable acts to we will spare no resources or expense in this effort. I just want to tell you that in these times, we have to unify. We have to come together and send one very clear, strong, unmistakable message that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America.
It’s a very bipartisan statement. I can tell you from both sides, we both agree on that. This egregious conduct is abhorrent to everything we hold sacred as Americans. My team will provide updates as they become available. I want to thank everybody for their understanding. We’re extremely angry, upset, unhappy about what we witnessed this morning and we will get to the bottom of it.

Trump’s statement was weak and not enough. Instead of being angry and upset, Trump sounded unplugged and disinterested. His three-word retweet of Mike Pence was a more accurate description of his lack of concern than the prepared that he read. Trump inspired this violence, so he does not get to call for national unity and the country to rally as one.
Trump used violent and criminalizing rhetoric toward Democrats and CNN for years. Someone or a group of people out there listened to Trump’s words and took action against the people and organizations that this president has been falsely demonizing.
Donald Trump can’t be the solution, because Trump is the source of the problem.
