Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, slammed Trump for abusing his presidential power to declassify materials in the ongoing Russia investigation.
In a statement provided to PoliticusUSA, Rep. Schiff said, “President Trump, in a clear abuse of power, has decided to intervene in a pending law enforcement investigation by ordering the selective release of materials he believes are helpful to his defense team and thinks will advance a false narrative. With respect to some of these materials, I have been previously informed by the FBI and Justice Department that they would consider their release a red line that must not be crossed as they may compromise sources and methods. This is evidently of no consequence to a President who cares nothing about the country and everything about his narrow self-interest.”
Trump ordered the release of parts of the FISA application related to Carter Page. The FBI interviews of Bruce Ohr, and the unredacted text messages of James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, and Bruce Ohr.
Trump is using the power of the presidency to go on a fishing expedition. He is looking for details to cherry pick that he can use to help his defense against a report from Robert Mueller that is certain to be damning.
Rep. Schiff was correct. Donald Trump is abusing his power, and the best thing that you can do about it is to get yourself into a voting booth and cast your ballot in November for Democratic House and Senate candidates.
The abuse of power is going to continue until the American people put a Congress in place who will stop Trump.
