National Enquirer Boss Given Immunity In Cohen Case As The Net Closes Around Trump

Federal prosecutors have given immunity to National Enquirer chief executive David Pecker in the Michael Cohen case, as the net is closing tighter around Donald Trump.

The Wall Street Journal reported:

David Pecker, the chief executive of the company that publishes the National Enquirer, was granted immunity by federal prosecutors for providing information about Michael Cohen and Donald Trump in the criminal investigation into hush-money payments for two women during the 2016 presidential campaign, according to people familiar with the matter.

In exchange for immunity, Mr. Pecker, CEO of American Media, Inc., has met with prosecutors and shared details about payments Mr. Cohen arranged in an effort to silence two women who alleged sexual encounters with Mr. Trump, including Mr. Trump’s knowledge of the deals, some of the people familiar said. Prosecutors have indicated that Mr. Pecker won’t be criminally charged for his participation in the deals, the people said.

The Feds Could Be Building A Case Against Trump

Michael Cohen has already pleaded guilty, so why are prosecutors so interested in what David Pecker has to say? Pecker is, or maybe was, one of Trump’s best friends, so he probably didn’t voluntarily come to prosecutors and offer information on the conspiracy to conceal the illegal hush money payments to the women that Trump had affairs with.

It makes sense that prosecutors may still be building a case, and the one major player left in the conspiracy which has yet to be indicted is President Donald Trump. There is a great deal of debate over whether or not a sitting president can be indicted. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) is arguing that a president can be indicted, but possibly can’t be tried until they are removed from or leave office.

The possibility exists that Trump could be criminally indicted while in office, but a trail would be postponed until he is a private citizen again.

The immunity for David Pecker is another nail in Trump’s coffin.
