Trump Tweet Blames Sessions For Mueller’s “Witch Hunt”

President Donald Trump was up early posting on Twitter today, and he once again picked on some of his favorite targets, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions. At 7:31 a.m. Trump tweeted:

“The Russian Witch Hunt Hoax continues, all because Jeff Sessions didn’t tell me he was going to recuse himself…I would have quickly picked someone else. So much time and money wasted, so many lives ruined…and Sessions knew better than most that there was No Collusion!”

We have reported before that Sessions is untouchable by Trump, since he a popular former U.S. Senator. This means that current senators — both Republicans and Democrats — do not want Trump to fire him, which he legally could do.

So because he can’t get rid of Sessions — or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein — Trump has to content himself with playing politics. The more Trump is losing legally the more he tries to fire up his base by attacking his favorite targets.

Trump thinks that by attacking Sessions while he’s attacking Mueller and Democrats he will insulate himself from the legal peril that he faces. This of course is ludicrous, because even Fox News can’t protect a criminal like Donald Trump from the consequences of his crimes.

Last week House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., suggested Trump could have picked another Attorney General, saying there “are lots of really good lawyers in the country. He could have picked someone else.”

Trump quoted Gowdy’s remarks, and concluded: “And I wish I did!”

Trump has been highly critical of Sessions ever since the Attorney General made the legally correct decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. Sessions knew that as both a potential witness and a potential target in the probe he could not legally be in charge of the probe.

Trump, however, has been constantly attacking the former Alabama senator for various perceived sins, including failure to launch full-blown investigations into Hillary Clinton, the Democratic National Committee, fired FBI Director James Comey and fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein took control of the Russia probe after Sessions recused himself. After that, he appointed Mueller to investigate charges of collusion between the Trump 2016 campaign and Russia.

Two weeks ago Trump began demanding that the Justice Department investigate charges that the FBI had planted a spy in his campaign, naming the entire affair “Spygate.”

Giving in to Trump’s demands, Rosenstein told the Justice Department inspector general to investigate alleged “impropriety or political motivation” in the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference.

As he continues to suffer attacks from his boss on Twitter, Jeff Sessions probably agrees with the large majority of Americans who wish Bob Mueller would wait no longer to take the final steps he needs to take to remove from office the biggest embarrassment in U.S. presidential history.
