Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating Donald Trump for pressuring Attorney General Jeff Sessions to maintain oversight of the Russia investigation even after he recused himself.
When they met, Mr. Trump was ready to talk — but not about the travel ban. His grievance was with Mr. Sessions: The president objected to his decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. Mr. Trump, who had told aides that he needed a loyalist overseeing the inquiry, berated Mr. Sessions and told him he should reverse his decision, an unusual and potentially inappropriate request.
Mr. Sessions refused.
The confrontation, which has not been previously reported, is being investigated by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, as are the president’s public and private attacks on Mr. Sessions and efforts to get him to resign. Mr. Trump dwelled on the recusal for months, according to confidants and current and former administration officials who described his behavior toward the attorney general.
Trump efforts to obstruct justice weren’t limited to firing Comey and all of Comey’s witnesses. They aren’t limited to Trump’s constant attacks on the FBI and DOJ. Trump was trying to get Jeff Sessions to violate his recusal by running the investigation even though he was recused. This request should sound familiar because it is exactly what Rep. Devin Nunes did to sabotage the House Intelligence Committee’s Russia investigation.
Trump’s complaints about Sessions not “protecting” him make even more sense now.
Donald Trump was trying to rig the Russia investigation, and when he couldn’t, he tried to force his attorney general to quit.
Robert Mueller knows all, and it appears that the Special Counsel is putting together a damning case that Trump tried to obstruct justice. Trouble is just around the corner for Trump, as Mueller is leaving no stone unturned in his search for the truth about Trump/Russia connection.
