President Trump often refuses to even admit that Russia attacked the United States during the 2016 election, let alone acknowledging that they did so to help him.
In Comey’s new book due to be published next week, the former FBI Director claims that during an intelligence briefing during which the President was told about the attack, he was more interested in spinning it to suggest there had been no impact on the result of the election.
“‘But you found there was no impact on the result, right?’ The intelligence team said they had done no such analysis.”
Here is the excerpt:
– Comey described an intelligence briefing for the president-elect at Trump Tower, where Trump and his team were told about Russia’s interference in the election:
‘I recall Trump listening without interrupting, and asking only one question, which was really more of a statement: “But you found there was no impact on the result, right?” The intelligence team said they had done no such analysis.
‘What I found telling was what Trump and his team didn’t ask. They were about to lead a country that had been attacked by a foreign adversary, yet they had no questions about what the future Russian threat might be.’
Instead, Trump and his team immediately started discussing how they would “spin” the information on Russia as if the intelligence officers were not in the room. ‘They were keen to emphasize that there was no impact on the vote, meaning that the Russians hadn’t elected Trump.’
For all of his protestations, not only does Trump know that Russia attacked the United States and he is doing nothing about it, but he also knows that there is no evidence that the attack did not impact the result.
The result being that he “won.”
Trump has continued to ignore the Russian attack on our country, as have Republicans in Congress who have actually done more to enable and protect the ongoing attacks than they have to protect the country – simply because the attacks benefit them.
If the country ever gets around to asking why a country dead set on undermining western democracy is getting such an assist from American Republicans, the real depth of the problems we are facing will come to light.
