‘The World Is Watching’: Sen. Blumenthal Demands Bill To Protect Mueller As Trump Implodes

Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut urged his Republican colleagues to join him and other Democrats in passing a bill to protect Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation.

The Democrat says the passage of such a measure is even more crucial now as Trump continues to push the country closure to the “abyss” of a constitutional crisis.

“The world is watching,” Sen. Blumenthal said in an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes.

Video:

Sen. Blumenthal said Congress is pushing forward with a bipartisan bill that would protect Mueller:

The Congress is pressing ahead with legislation to protect the special counsel. Today in the judiciary committee, we discussed it at some length. And my view is, and expectation that we will vote on a law to protect the special counsel that I and others have drafted on both sides of the aisle. It’s bipartisan. There is an increasing sense of alarm among my Republican colleagues, as well as Democratic members of the Senate, that we are staring into the abyss. The world is watching. And history will be watching what we do because the president’s tirades and rants, the raid on his lawyer authorized by a court and other steps which are provoking this schizophrenic view that you outlined earlier indicate that he is approaching the point where he may actually fire Rod Rosenstein. That would be tantamount to firing Robert Mueller or directly trying to further impede the investigation. He’s committed a number of obstruction of justice acts already.

Republicans seem increasingly worried that Trump is about to cross a red line

For months, Republicans have sat on their hands, claiming there is no indication that Trump has any intention of removing Robert Mueller as special counsel.

But in recent days, as Trump spirals out of control in response to the FBI raids of Michael Cohen’s offices, even the GOP appears to be concerned.

That’s why, as Sen. Blumenthal noted on Thursday, some Republicans have joined with Democrats in the work of crafting legislation to protect Mueller. That’s because it’s gone from a possibility to a probability that Trump will do the unthinkable.

America is on the verge of a constitutional crisis, and it’s no longer hyperbole to say so.  Republicans and Democrats need to stand united in preventing this dangerous president from pushing America any closer to the abyss.
