Former FBI Special Agent, lawyer, and editor at Just Security Asha Rangappa opined on Twitter that President Trump would have been better off actually pardoning people rather than trying to use the possibility of a pardon to help himself, especially since a pardon is supposed to be for the good of the country not the good of the President himself.
“So basically, dum dum POTUS would have been better off *actually* pardoning people, instead of “floating” it as a carrot to get folks to help him out of a pickle,” the national security expert wrote in a thread conclusion. “Perhaps if he had better lawyers, he would have known that.”
Here’s Rangappa’s thread on the Trump pardon scandal:
THREAD. To add a little historical and constitutional color to @alexwhiting, a few things to consider that bolster his argument:
Among his many problems, Donald Trump’s inability to attract competent legal help is a rather large one. And it’s ironic, given his claim that people should elect him in spite of the fact that he knew nothing about government and had zero experience, because he would hire all of the “best people.” The best people want nothing to do with Donald Trump. His latest addition as a lawyer specializes in medieval history.
The pardon scandal is bigger than it might have seemed, not only for the obstruction of justice theme but because of the way Trump did it. Trump keeps using the thug tactics of a New York property developer with thug lawyers behind him as his muscle, but that approach does not work for a President. Trump’s ability to only think of himself has caused his pardon ploy to blow up in his face.
