Anyone familiar with Iowa Republican congressman Steve King’s habit of making ignorant and racist comments won’t be surprised to hear that he’s done it again. This time, though, he’s managed to lower himself to new depths by attacking Parkland survivor Emma Gonzalez for wearing a jacket featuring a patch of the Cuban flag during her emotional speech at the massive March for Our Lives demonstration.
The lawmaker or someone in charge of running his social media profiles shared a meme on his official Facebook page that suggested Gonzalez isn’t truly Cuban enough to don the flag and painted her as hypocritical for supporting gun control when people in Cuba have supposedly suffered as a result of not having firearms.
“This is how you look when you claim Cuban heritage yet don’t speak Spanish and ignore the fact that your ancestors fled the island when the dictatorship turned Cuba into a prison camp, after removing all weapons from its citizens; hence their right to self defense,” reads the image.
In response to a comment saying “A United States Congressman, quite literally attacking a child in hopes of protecting guns,” a member of King’s team wrote, “Nah, just pointing out the irony of someone wearing a communist flag while advocating for gun control.”
Replying to Brandon Wolf, a survivor of the 2016 mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Florida, who asked what the congressman had done for his community and slamming him for attacking Gonzalez, King’s staffer wrote, “Pointing out the irony of someone wearing the flag of a communist country while simultaneously calling for gun control isn’t ‘picking’ on anyone. It’s calling attention to the truth, but we understand that lefties find that offensive.”
King’s attempt to discredit a teen girl who survived a tragedy only proves that the GOP is getting nervous about the impact Gonzalez and her schoolmates are having on the gun control issue.
