After Trump took to Twitter a few minutes past midnight on Saturday to brag about the firing of FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe, he was soon called out by a Democratic legislator who warned that Trump himself would soon be losing his job.
“Gloat now, but you will be fired soon,” wrote California Rep. Eric Swalwell. “And it’s not going to be done cowardly, as you’ve done to so many who’ve served you. There’s a storm gathering, Mr. President, and it’s going to wipe out you and your corrupt organization all the way down to the studs.”
In a prior tweet responding to the news of McCabe’s ouster, Swalwell pointed out that Trump was acting exactly how someone with something to hide behaves.
“We have to fight back. This is @realDonaldTrump punishing anyone involved with #TrumpRussiaInvestigation,” he wrote. “It’s how guilty people act. And shame on Sessions. In Trump’s presence he cowers like a boy, but to sing for his supper he thinks he’s acting like a man doing this.”
Salwell is a member of the House Intelligence Committee. Republicans in the committee, who hold the majority, recently announced that they ended their investigation looking into whether Trump and his campaign colluded with Russia during the 2016 election, but the fight isn’t over as Democrats explore the possibility of prosecuting witnesses who gave misleading statements.
Trump’s panic in connection to the FBI’s Russia probe gets more apparent with each passing day, and the possibility that he’ll try find some way to shut it down is increasing. Though even some members of the GOP say Trump firing Mueller would effectively be the end of his presidency, others have shrugged off reports that Trump already tried having the special counsel fired and showed no signs that they would have objected if he’d actually gone through with it.
Hopefully Swalwell’s prediction is correct.
