New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has had enough of watered down solutions when it comes to gun violence. Instead, he wants members of his party to put it all on the table.
In an interview with Rachel Maddow, he urged the national Democratic Party to go all in on real solutions – universal background checks, banning assault weapons and extended magazines, etc. – that can actually have a real impact.
Video:
Cuomo urged members of his party to go all in:
I would like to see the national Democrats, frankly, put forth a real bill that defines the problem in actuality and defines a legislative solution rather than starting to talk about well the best we can get. Tell the American people what the real problem is, tell them what the real solution is. Put it out there, have the political courage to put it out there and then whatever you get from a compromise is a second conversation. But at least let’s have the intelligent dialogue of the real ideas to solve the real problem.
To his credit, Cuomo joined governors in three surrounding states – Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Jersey – to create a regional coalition to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill people. He says this is too important an issue to wait for the federal government to act.
Still, the New York governor is urging Democrats in Washington to take similar approaches, instead of starting off in a position of compromise as they so often do. Gun control measures are popular across the board, and it’s time for Democrats to embrace them.
For too long, members of both parties have been too afraid to act on this issue. Democrats should take the Cuomo’s lead and go all in. It’s what the American people want.
