Trump and his team’s stance on whether he’ll agree to a face-to-face interview with Special Counsel Robert Mueller for the ongoing Russia probe keeps changing.
Last summer, Trump said he’d agree to being questioned “one hundred percent,” claiming he’d be “glad” to do so. But that was prior to the indictments of Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, Papadopoulos’ guilty plea, former Trump confidant Steve Bannon’s deal to be interviewed by prosecutors, and several other developments that have heated up the investigation.
Now his legal team is trying to avoid a Trump-Mueller sit-down, probably because they have little confidence that won’t incriminate himself. Their client is, after all, the man who basically admitted to obstructing justice on Twitter.
During a news conference earlier this month, Trump first deflected when asked if he’d agree to be questioned by Mueller in person. When pressed, he responded, “We’ll see what happens. I mean, certainly I’ll see what happens. But when they have no collusion, and nobody’s found any collusion at any level, it seems unlikely that you’d even have an interview.”
The next day, reporters asked White House Press Secretary about the president’s shift from being completely committed to the possibility of a face-to-face interview to only being willing to say “we’ll see.”
Sanders claimed nothing had changed and that the president would be “fully cooperative” with Mueller.
Ty Cobb, a White House lawyer, said last week during a podcast interview that Trump is “very eager to sit down” and give his account of what happened, but he also added that the Trump legal team would make efforts to get some questions approved for answering in writing.
That’s in line with the most recent statement on the subject from Trump’s attorneys. According to The Washington Post, his legal team is seeking to provide a “hybrid form” of testimony from the president, “answering some questions in a face-to-face interview and others in a written statement.”
They’re undoubtedly busy trying to figure out what topics are the least likely to result in Trump putting his foot in his mouth again.
