Despite having promised to be “the greatest jobs president that God ever created,” Trump’s first year as president has cost tens of thousands of people jobs in at least one industry — tourism. As it turns out, having a leader who’s insulted various races, ethnicities, and religions has a negative impact on the number of people who want to visit your country.
As reported by NBC News, the most recent statistics from the National Travel and Tourism Office show that inbound tourism to the United States has decreased by 4%. While it sounds like a small dent, this has meant the loss of $4.6 billion and 40,000 jobs. This also means that the U.S. is no longer the second most popular destination in the world, slipping to number three.
This isn’t surprising. The “Trump Slump,” as it’s been nicknamed, began shortly after he took office.
Some experts have speculated that this trend is likely related to resentment Trump has fueled with his anti-immigrant, Islamophobic, bigoted rhetoric and policies.
The U.S. Travel Association wants to launch a “Visit U.S.” lobbying campaign to stop the decline, but it’s doubtful Trump will make it easy. He did just refer to Haiti and the African continent as “shithole countries” two weeks ago.
