Trump Pens Op-Ed Bragging About Accomplishments Hours After He Shuts Down Government

Hours after Donald Trump’s actions led to a government shutdown, the president penned an op-ed in the Washington Examiner touting his so-called accomplishments over the past year.

“We are putting America first, making real change in Washington, and creating opportunities for all of our people,” Trump wrote. “From coast to coast, there is a renewed spirit. Our country is roaring back more quickly than anyone could have predicted. The American Dream is real again.”

The major focus of Trump’s op-ed was the economy, which he claims complete credit for, despite the fact that former President Barack Obama handed him the same strong economy a year ago today.

In the op-ed, Trump did what he always does – slapped his name on something that isn’t really his:

Estimates predict the U.S. economy grew at an annualized rate of more than 3 percent in the fourth quarter of last year – just like it did in the two quarters before that. The economy has created more than 2 million new jobs, and the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest rate in 17 years: 4.1 percent. We have achieved the lowest African-American unemployment rate on record, and the unemployment rate for Hispanic Americans has also hit historic lows. Chrysler has announced plans to bring jobs and production back to the U.S. from Mexico. And the stock market continues to set record high after record high.

Economic experts and the American public both agree: Obama deserves credit for the economy. Trump’s weak op-ed isn’t likely to change that.

At the end of the day, nobody is listening to this president anymore. His approval rating currently stands at 39 percent. His self-congratulatory nonsense rang particularly hollow on Saturday as the American people watch Trump and his GOP allies in Congress fail to fulfill their one responsibility – keeping the government’s lights on.

Despite the steaming pile of garbage Trump penned on Saturday, there is one true accomplishment that he never mentioned: He’s the first modern president to oversee a government shutdown when his party is in complete control of Congress.
