A new Morning Consult/Politico Poll has found that majorities of Democratic and Independent voters, along with 50% of Republicans want Roy Moore to drop out of the Alabama Senate race.
The key findings via Morning Consult, “60% voters indicated that Moore should drop his bid for U.S. Senate. This includes 72% of Democrats, 62% of Independents, 50% of Republican voters and 49% of Trump voters. 60% of voters believe the sexual allegations are credible – including 49% of Republican voters.”
Roy Moore could look at the over half of Republicans who don’t find the allegations credible and see that as a reason to stay in the race. The larger problem for the Republican Party is that the potential election and seating of Roy Moore in the Senate will have broader implications in defining both the Republican Party and GOP majority in the Senate.
The Moore scandal builds on the Trump sexual assault of women in the national perception of the Republican Party. Unless Republicans want to be known as the party that corrupted democracy selling itself out to Putin, tax cuts for the rich, and sex crimes, they need to ditch Roy Moore and stop obstructing the Russia investigation.
A win by Democrat Doug Jones would kill the Republican agenda for the rest of Trump’s term, but if Roy Moore wins and is seated in the Senate, he could cost Republicans control of the entire Congress in 2018.
