Speaker of the House Paul Ryan allowed Donald Trump to name the Republican tax reform bill, and immediately regretted it as Trump wants to call the bill the Tax Cut Cut Cut Act.
ABC News reported, “Ryan initially kicked the naming over to Trump because of his penchant towards branding, according to a senior Hill aide. Ryan and Brady have pushed back on the naming of the bill. However, Trump has held firm. Trump has been insistent that the bill be called The Cut Cut Cut Act.”
It is as if Republicans really didn’t know that allowing a president who doesn’t read and who has no interest in the legislative process to title a bill would result in total disaster. No one is sure why the word cut has to be in the bill three times, but there are so many internal disputes among Republicans and the White House that the legislation may not be unveiled until next week.
Trump used the word cut three times in the bill because White House polling showed that people react more favorably to the phrase tax cut than tax reform. Both the White House claim that the bill name is a non-issue, but if it isn’t an issue, why are they still fighting over it?
The myth that Trump is great at branding at been destroyed. Trump isn’t a marketing genius. He is just a guy who knows how to appeal to the ignorant, and the lowest common denominator.
Trump wants a bill title that sounds like it was written by a two-year-old, which is fitting because Republicans are governing like children.
