Trump’s White House Lawyer Has Lawyered Up As Obstruction Of Justice Investigation Gets Hot

Donald Trump’s White House legal counsel has hired a lawyer as Special Counsel Robert Mueller wants to know what he knew about why Trump fired James Comey.

According to Law360:
Former White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and White House Counsel Donald McGahn have hired Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP partner William Burck to advise them in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, Law360 has learned.

….

McGahn is expected to be asked what he knew about why President Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey in May, as part of Mueller’s widely reported investigation into whether Trump obstructed justice in firing the official leading an investigation into his campaign, according to the person familiar with the hiring. McGahn is more likely to be interviewed as a witness rather than a party to Trump’s potential obstruction, the person said.

Mueller is reviewing the draft of the Comey firing letter that he obtained, and he has some questions for the people who were working in the White House at the time about the reason why the President fired the then FBI Director.

The Special Counsel investigation into Trump and Russia is large and covers a lot of ground, but what is becoming clear is that Mueller and his team are doing a comprehensive investigation into potential Trump obstruction of justice. The reason why Trump is constantly freaking out about the Russia investigation is that the obstruction of justice charge, unlike any potential collision that may have occurred with Putin, is squarely on Trump.

Trump was the one who had the conversations with Comey and wanted the FBI Director fired. Trump approved the letter firing Comey, and the President even admitted on national television that he fired the FBI Director due to the Russia investigation.

If Trump does face impeachment, it is looking possible that it could be for obstruction of justice, not collusion with Russia. Collusion is difficult to prove, but Trump may have given the Special Counsel all he needs to find that the President obstructed justice.
