South Korea Is Trying To Ignore Trump Because They Think He’s Nuts

The South Koreans are trapped between an unstable North Korea with an accelerating nuclear program, and a US president who they think is nuts.

The Washington Post reported:
“They think they’re dealing with an unreasonable partner and complaining about it isn’t going to help — in fact, it might make it worse,” said David Straub, a former State Department official who dealt with both Koreas and recently published a book about anti-Americanism in South Korea.

“Opinion polls show South Koreans have one of the lowest rates of regard for Trump in the world and they don’t consider him to be a reasonable person,” Straub said. “In fact, they worry he’s kind of nuts, but they still want the alliance.”

If the North Korea nuclear crisis gets resolved with a diplomatic solution, it likely won’t come from Trump, as he is busy lobbing empty threats at the North, while the South is trying to navigate between a crazy president and the threat of potential war.

People are reminded on a daily basis of the chaos and instability the President causes at home, but he is also destabilizing US foreign policy. If America’s allies don’t believe that they have a stable partner that they can depend on, the US will no longer be a world leader.

Trump is lowering the standing of the United States of America around the world. The post World War II era of US global leadership could be coming to end, as the world is learning that they can’t depend on Trump’s America.
